If a third child seat is about to join the two already in your back seat, congratulations if that means a new arrival. Whatever the reason, the question is the same: will three fit across the back, or is it time for a different car?
The car you have was most likely chosen for two, and that was the right call at the time. More cars manage three than you might expect, and the ones that don't usually fail for a reason you can check in advance. Below are nine cars to shortlist, the grades within them that can't take three across, and what to check before you spend anything. If no one has published a three-across fit for a car you like, fit your own three seats in it before you commit. Once you know what you need, Rodar can find that exact grade and seat layout through our network of over 1,000 trusted automotive dealers and manufacturers.
Before you shortlist: what decides whether three fit
The safety rating can't answer it
ANCAP fits each child restraint on its own, one seat at a time. ANCAP's technical reports for most of the cars below carry the same line: "Installation of multiple restraints has not been assessed and may not be possible."
So a strong child occupant score tells you each seat works. It does not tell you three fit side by side. That comes down to the width of the rear bench, how shaped its cushion is, and the width of the three restraints you own.
Count the anchorages, seat by seat
Every restraint needs somewhere to fix. Most cars have ISOFIX on the two outboard seats only, so the middle restraint usually goes in with the seatbelt and a top tether. In a seven-seater the third row is where cars differ most. Some have a top tether in every rear seat. Others have none in the third row, and ANCAP then does not recommend a child restraint there at all.
Plan which seat goes where
The middle seat is where particular restraint types fail, and the capsule is often the one that won't go there. ANCAP could not correctly install its capsule in the centre rear seat of the Tesla Model Y, or in the second-row centre of the Ford Everest. In the Hyundai Santa Fe, one of its boosters would not go in the second-row centre. Putting the capsule in the middle is a common tip, but in some cars it is the one place it can't go. Start your seating plan from the car's ANCAP report.
Then think about the buckle. With three restraints side by side, the centre seatbelt buckle sits buried between two of them. A child in a booster who is meant to buckle up on their own at school pick-up may not be able to reach it. Try it with all three seats fitted, not on an empty bench.
Plan for next year as well. A capsule becomes a convertible, and a convertible becomes a booster. A layout that fits today can stop fitting when the toddler moves to a wider forward-facing seat, so check the combination you will have in a year or two.
Narrower seats can be the answer
Sometimes three narrower restraints solve it and the car stays. We don't recommend restraints, but the Child Restraint Evaluation Program rates them independently at childcarseats.com.au, and it is worth a look before you change cars.
People movers
Sliding doors open without swinging into the car next to you, which makes reaching the middle seat in a tight car park much easier.
Kia Carnival
The Kia Carnival has ISOFIX and a top tether in five rear seats, plus sliding doors on both sides.
On child restraints. ISOFIX and top tethers are fitted to all three second-row seats and the two outboard third-row seats. The third-row centre has neither, and ANCAP does not recommend a restraint there. One of ANCAP's convertibles could not be correctly installed rear-facing on ISOFIX in the outboard seats of rows two and three.
Reaching the third row. BabyDrive, an independent Australian child seat reviewer, reports that on the current generation you can remove the centre second-row seat to make a walkway. You can also bring the outboard second-row seats forward when the child seats in them are fitted with ISOFIX rather than the seatbelt.
ANCAP: rated 2021, expires December 2027. Child occupant protection 88 per cent.
Volkswagen Multivan
The Volkswagen Multivan has ISOFIX and a top tether in every rear seat, according to ANCAP. Volkswagen builds the cabin from individual seats that slide, fold or come out entirely, so you can set the spacing around your restraints instead of working around a fixed bench.
On child restraints. Both of ANCAP's rear-facing convertibles could not be correctly installed on ISOFIX in the third-row outboard seats, so check where a rear-facing seat can go before you settle the layout.
Which version. It comes as a seven-seater and an eight-seater. Ask for the exact seat layout of the version you are quoted, so you know whether your three restraints sit in one row or across two.
ANCAP: rated 2022, applying to Australian vehicles on sale from April 2025, expires December 2028. Child occupant protection 88 per cent.
Seven- and eight-seat SUVs
A third row gives you a spare seat for a grandparent or a friend's child. What it can hold depends on its anchorages, and on whether anyone can reach it once three restraints are fitted in the second row.
Hyundai Palisade
The Hyundai Palisade 8-seater has a second-row bench with a top tether in every position.
On child restraints. ISOFIX is fitted to the outboard seats of rows two and three. Top tethers are fitted across the second row and to the outboard third-row seats. The third-row centre has no tether, so ANCAP does not recommend a restraint there. ANCAP's capsule could not be correctly installed with the seatbelt in the third-row outboard seats.
Which grade. Hyundai's 7-seat Palisade has two captain seats in the second row, so that row takes two restraints, not three. Choose an 8-seat version: the Elite 8 Seat, the Calligraphy 8 Seat or the Calligraphy Black 8 Seat. The Calligraphy comes both ways, so the grade name alone won't tell you.
ANCAP: rated 2025, expires December 2031. Child occupant protection 86 per cent.
Hyundai Santa Fe
The current Hyundai Santa Fe has a top tether in every rear seat, third row included. That matters if a fourth restraint, or a visiting cousin, ever needs a seat. If you have read that the Santa Fe has no third-row tethers, that applied to the previous generation, built from 2018 to April 2024. BabyDrive fitted three child seats across the second row of the current Santa Fe Hybrid.
On child restraints. ISOFIX is fitted to the outboard seats of rows two and three. One of ANCAP's boosters could not be correctly installed in the second-row centre, and its convertibles could not be fitted safely on ISOFIX in the third row.
Which grade. The Calligraphy is also sold as a 6-seater with captain's chairs in the second row, which has no centre seat. For three across, choose a 7-seat version.
ANCAP: rated 2024, expires December 2031. Child occupant protection 86 per cent.
Toyota Kluger
The Toyota Kluger is a three-across-the-second-row car. All three of those seats have a top tether. BabyDrive fitted three child seats across the second row of the Kluger Hybrid, and found access to the third row good.
On child restraints. ISOFIX is fitted to the two outboard second-row seats. There are no anchorages in the third row, so ANCAP does not recommend restraints there. ANCAP also notes care is needed with the seatbelt when fitting a rear-facing capsule in the outboard second-row seats. Think of it as three restraints in the middle row, and a third row for people who are out of child seats.
ANCAP: rated 2021, expires December 2027. Child occupant protection 88 per cent.
Ford Everest
The Ford Everest has a top tether on every second- and third-row seat, so restraints can be spread over two rows instead of squeezed into one. BabyDrive also fitted three child seats across its second row.
On child restraints. ISOFIX is fitted to the outboard second-row seats only. ANCAP's capsule could not be correctly installed in the second-row centre or in either third-row seat, so the capsule belongs in an outboard second-row seat.
ANCAP: rated 2022, expires December 2028. Child occupant protection 93 per cent.
Mazda CX-80
The Mazda CX-80 has a top tether in every rear seat and scored full points, 12 out of 12, in ANCAP's restraint installation check.
On child restraints. ISOFIX is fitted to the outboard second-row seats.
Which grade. Mazda lists second-row captain seats for the Azami with the SP pack. If three restraints are going across the second row, confirm the version you are quoted has the seven-seat layout.
ANCAP: rated 2024, expires December 2031. Child occupant protection 87 per cent.
Five-seaters that can take three
Not every family needs a third row. If the boot holds what you carry, a five-seater with the right rear seat can do the job without going bigger.
Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y has a top tether in all three rear seats and a flat rear floor. BabyDrive fitted three child seats across its back seat. Its write-up is not dated, so try your own seats in the current car.
On child restraints. ISOFIX is fitted to the outboard seats. ANCAP's capsule and one of its boosters could not be correctly installed in the centre rear seat, so plan for the capsule to go in an outboard seat.
Which version. ANCAP's rating excludes the longer Model Y L. If you are looking at an L, check its second-row layout and anchorages separately.
Buying one. Any saving on a Model Y comes through a novated lease, if your employer offers one. Here is how a novated lease works on an electric car.
ANCAP: rated 2025 for vehicles built from February 2025, expires December 2031. Child occupant protection 95 per cent.
Volkswagen Tiguan
In the current Volkswagen Tiguan, every restraint ANCAP tried fitted in every rear seat, for full points. BabyDrive also fitted three across in a Tiguan R-Line. Its write-up is not dated, so try your own seats in the current car.
On child restraints. ISOFIX and top tethers are fitted to the outboard rear seats. ANCAP's report gives two different answers for the centre seat's anchorages, so check them on the car you are quoted.
ANCAP: rated 2024, covering Australian vehicles built from November 2024 and on sale from May 2025. Expires December 2031. Child occupant protection 88 per cent.
The grade decides it, not just the model
The same nameplate can carry a second-row bench or two captain's chairs. On this list, the captain's chairs come on top grades: the Palisade Calligraphy 7-seat, the Santa Fe Calligraphy 6-seat and the CX-80 Azami with the SP pack. Paying more can cost you the middle seat, so choose the seat layout first and the grade second.
The table sets out where each car's anchorages sit. Prices are the retail price each range starts from on Rodar's car pages, including estimated stamp duty, rego, CTP and dealer delivery.

Where a cell says not confirmed, we have not found a version of that car with captain's chairs, and have not ruled one out. Check the seat count of the grade you are quoted.
Five seats, seven, or sliding doors
A five-seater keeps you in a car you know the size of. With three restraints in, though, there is no spare seat, so a grandparent or a friend's child means taking a second car.
A seven- or eight-seater gives you that spare row. Check two things before you choose one. First, its anchorages: the Kluger has none in the third row, while the Santa Fe, Everest and CX-80 have a tether in every rear seat. Second, how anyone reaches that row once three seats are fitted in the second. Unless an outboard seat can move forward with a child seat still in it, whoever is heading for the back has to climb over. With the third row up for the school run, check there is still room for the pram.
Sliding doors make the daily trips easier. Loading the middle child means leaning across another child's seat, and a door that slides back gives you more room to do it in a car park.
If you are still weighing up the bigger options, our guide to the best 7 seater SUVs in Australia goes through them in more detail.
Others you may be considering
Kia Sorento. Australian vehicles have a top tether in every rear seat and ISOFIX on the outboard seats of rows two and three. Its ANCAP rating, from 2020, expires in December 2026, so check its status before you buy.
Hyundai Staria. Sliding doors and top tethers across the second row, but none in the third row, where ANCAP does not recommend restraints.
Isuzu MU-X. The same pattern: top tethers across the second row only, and the third row is not recommended for restraints.
Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson. Cars that share a lot underneath can still give different answers. BabyDrive fitted three across in a Sportage SX+, but found three seats a tight fit in a Tucson Hybrid, with the seats touching. ANCAP could not correctly install its capsule in either the centre or the outboard rear seats of the Sportage.
How Rodar helps you get the right car before you need it
Once you know which car and which seat layout works, the next job is finding that exact version, ideally before you need it. The grade with the bench is not necessarily the one in stock nearby.
Tell us the model, the grade and the seat layout. We take it to our network of over 1,000 trusted automotive dealers and manufacturers, and the drive-away offers come back side by side. We sort your trade-in on the car that now fits two, arrange finance if you want it, through a car loan or a novated lease if your employer offers one, and deliver the car to your door. Nobody has to take three children to a car yard. On a Tesla, the saving comes through a novated lease instead.
On timing, if the car is in stock and your finance is already sorted, it can be with you in 24 to 48 hours. Most of the time it is one week onwards, depending on the model and stock across our network. If there is a due date, starting early takes the pressure off.
Before you commit, fit your own three restraints in the exact grade if you can. It is the one test that answers the question for your family.
You have plenty to organise at the moment. If it helps, let us take the car off your list. Get your competitive offers whenever you are ready, or read our FAQs first. No pressure either way.
