Congratulations. Somewhere between the first scan and the first night home, the car stops being about how it drives and starts being about whether the pram fits. A rear-facing seat takes legroom from whoever sits in front, and a safety rating you never thought much about suddenly matters.

The good news is that you have plenty of strong options, and you do not need to become an expert to pick one. These are ten cars worth putting a baby seat in, each with its ANCAP rating and the year it was awarded. How we chose these ten

Every car here carries a current ANCAP rating, given with the year it was awarded. ANCAP tests against the criteria in force at the time, and ratings expire. A five star result from 2019 and a five star result from 2025 are not the same statement about a car.

The rest comes down to what changes day to day with a baby on board: how wide the rear doors open, how much room a rear-facing seat leaves the person in front, whether the boot takes a pram, and what the car costs to run.

Two cars came off the shortlist on their safety ratings. Both are named at the end, with the reason.

The ten best cars for new families in 2026

In no particular order. The right one depends on how many children you are planning for and how far you drive.

Toyota RAV4

The default medium SUV for Australian families. Most people compare everything else to it.

On its safety rating. ANCAP's five star rating for the RAV4 is datestamped 2019, covers vehicles built to December 2025, and has expired. It does not describe the generation on sale now. We will tell you the rating status of the exact build you are quoted.

• Hybrid and plug-in hybrid only. Toyota stopped selling a petrol RAV4 here, so the running costs start lower than the price suggests.
• Big enough for a pram and a weekly shop without being awkward in a car park.
• Demand is high and stock moves, so the grade and colour you want is usually the thing that decides your wait, not the model.

Mazda CX-5

The one families pick when they care how the car drives and how the cabin is finished.

On its safety rating. ANCAP's published CX-5 rating is datestamped 2017 and covers the KF series. Ask us to confirm what applies to the build you are offered rather than assuming it carries over.

• Rear doors open wide and close to square, which makes a rear-facing seat easier to load than the sleek shape suggests.
• A five seat SUV with no third row option, so every bit of the length goes to the two rows you actually use.
• Strong resale in its class, which matters if you plan to change cars in five years.

Kia Sportage

One car that covers most of what a family needs, without a compromise you have to plan around.

ANCAP rates it five stars, awarded in 2021, covering vehicles from November 2021. Child occupant protection scored 87 per cent.

• Kia covers it for seven years, unlimited kilometres, and that applies wherever you service it.
• Petrol, diesel and hybrid sit in the same range, so the drivetrain is a choice rather than a compromise you accept to get the car.
• The back seat is one of the wider ones in the class, which is what decides whether three across is realistic later.

Hyundai Tucson

Bigger than a Kona, less money than a Santa Fe, and that gap is exactly where a lot of growing families land.

ANCAP rates it five stars, awarded in 2021, covering all variants.

• Hyundai moved to seven years, unlimited kilometres, on 1 September 2025.
• Petrol and hybrid versions sit side by side, so you do not have to commit to one drivetrain to get the car you wanted.
• A useful amount of rear legroom for the outside dimensions, which is the number that matters once a rear-facing seat pushes the front seat forward.

A centre airbag between the front seats is standard on every variant, which is still not a given in this class.

Nissan X-Trail

A long standing family choice, and the e-POWER hybrid is an unusual way of doing it.

ANCAP rates it five stars, awarded in 2022, covering petrol and e-POWER variants from November 2022.

• The e-POWER system drives like an electric car but charges itself, which suits families without off street parking.
• Five and seven seat versions are both offered, so the third row is an option rather than something you pay for and never use.
• Safety assist scored 97 per cent, one of the strongest results in its rating round.

Where a third row is fitted it has no seat belt reminders and the curtain airbags do not extend to it.

Mitsubishi Outlander

Seven seats are standard on most grades, which is rare at this size and price.

ANCAP rates it five stars, tested against ANCAP's 2025 criteria, covering petrol and plug-in hybrid variants, re-tested after a safety upgrade.

• Mitsubishi covers it for up to 10 years or 200,000km, and the 10 years depends on servicing on schedule.
• The plug-in hybrid has been on sale long enough that used values and real world reports are already in.
• The third row suits younger children and occasional use rather than adults every day, which is true of almost everything at this size.

Mazda CX-80

The step up for a family that has outgrown a medium SUV but does not want a ladder frame four wheel drive.

ANCAP rates it five stars, awarded in 2024, covering petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants built from July 2024. Child occupant protection scored 87 per cent.

• Seven seats in a car that still drives like a Mazda, which is the reason most buyers look at it over the obvious alternatives.
• Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid are all offered, so towing families and school run families can buy the same car with different hardware.
• It is the newest design here, which shows most in the cabin and the driver assistance systems.

Subaru Forester

All wheel drive is standard, which is the reason it keeps selling to families outside the capital cities.

ANCAP rates it five stars, awarded in 2025, covering the new generation, from June 2025, in petrol and hybrid.

• Visibility is among the best in the class, which helps when you are reversing with a pram in the boot.
• Wide rear door openings and a fairly upright body make fitting a seat straightforward.
• The hybrid joined the new generation from June 2025, so the range now covers buyers who were previously priced out on fuel.

Toyota Kluger

The third row here works for adults, not just for short trips.

ANCAP rates it five stars, awarded in 2021, covering all variants built from March 2021.

• A third row adults can sit in, which starts to matter once children are school aged.
• Toyota's service network reaches most regional centres, which is part of why it holds value.
• It is a large car to park, and that is the trade you are making for the space.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The boxy current shape gave it a far more usable third row and a squarer boot than the car it replaced.

ANCAP rates it five stars, awarded in 2023, covering the current generation. Child occupant protection scored 86 per cent.

• Hyundai's seven year, unlimited kilometre warranty applies here too, from 1 September 2025.
• The hybrid makes it cheaper to run than most seven seaters its size.
• A child occupant detection feature alerts you if a rear seat occupant is detected when you leave the car.

There are no top tether anchorages in the third row, which means the third row cannot take a child restraint. On a seven seat SUV that is worth knowing before you buy.

Two we left off, and why

Both are popular family cars and both are easy to live with. Their ANCAP ratings are the reason they are not in the ten above.

Honda CR-V

ANCAP rated the CR-V four stars, not five, in a rating dated 2023 covering vehicles from September that year. Its safety assist score of 68 per cent sits below the five star threshold, and Australian cars get Honda Sensing rather than the Honda Sensing 360 system offered elsewhere. The rating covers all variants, two and four wheel drive, five and seven seat.

Hyundai Kona

The current Kona, on sale here since June 2023, is rated four stars across petrol, hybrid and electric. Protection of the driver's chest in the full width frontal test was assessed as Weak. The previous generation held five stars, so this is a step down rather than a car that was never rated well.

A four star rating is not a failure. It is a lower result than the five star cars beside it, and on a list built around family safety that is the deciding difference. We can still source either one: tell us and we will bring you offers.

The third row question

A seven seat SUV is not automatically a car that can carry seven people including children in restraints. A child seat needs a top tether anchorage, and some popular seven seaters do not have one in the third row.

On this list, ANCAP does not recommend fitting a child restraint in the third row of the Hyundai Santa Fe, because there are no top tether anchorages there. The Nissan X-Trail's third row, where fitted, has no seat belt reminders and the curtain airbags do not extend to it. Neither makes the car a poor choice for a family of four. Both matter if you were buying the third row for children.
