How much does an electric car cost to run?

For many households the running-cost savings add up meaningfully over a few years, but it depends on how much you drive and whether you can charge at home.
How far do electric cars really go?
Claimed range and real-world range are different numbers, and the gap is where most new EV owners get caught out. Australian range figures are usually quoted to the WLTP standard, which is more realistic than the older NEDC figure but still measured under controlled conditions.
As a working rule, expect to see somewhere between 75 and 90 per cent of the claimed figure in mixed driving. What pushes you toward the bottom of that band:
- Highway speeds. Unlike a petrol car, an EV is least efficient at sustained high speed. A car rated at 500km may return closer to 380km on a long freeway run.
- Climate control. Heating draws meaningfully more than cooling. Cars with a heat pump handle winter far better.
- Load and towing. A full car with roof bars, or anything on a tow bar, changes the figure substantially.
- Terrain. Hills cost range, though regenerative braking returns some on the way down.
The practical question is not what the brochure says but whether the car covers your longest regular trip with margin. For most Australian households doing under 50km a day, almost every current EV is more than enough, and range anxiety fades within a few weeks.
Charging at home versus public charging
Where you charge changes the running-cost equation more than which car you buy.
Home charging
A standard power point will add roughly 10 to 15km of range per hour, which is enough overnight for typical daily driving. A dedicated 7kW wall charger cuts that to a few hours and is what most owners eventually install. Budget for the charger plus electrical work, and check whether your switchboard needs upgrading. Public charging
Public DC fast charging is convenient but costs several times more per kilowatt-hour than off-peak home electricity. If you live in an apartment without a dedicated space, model your costs on public charging rates before you commit, because the running-cost advantage narrows considerably.
What EVs actually cost to service
There is no oil to change, no spark plugs, no exhaust and no gearbox in the conventional sense. Servicing typically covers brake fluid, cabin filters, tyre rotation and a software and systems check.
Two costs run higher than people expect. Tyres wear faster because EVs are heavier and deliver torque instantly, and some models use specific low-rolling-resistance tyres that cost more to replace. Comprehensive insurance can also be higher, partly because repair networks for some newer brands are still developing.
What about resale value?
This is the genuine open question with EVs in 2026. Prices in the new-car market have moved substantially as competition has intensified, and that flows through to used values. A car bought at a higher price before a round of cuts will have taken a bigger hit than the same car bought after.
Two things help protect you. Buying at a competitive price in the first place matters more than it does with a petrol car, because you are starting from a lower base. And battery warranties, typically eight years, transfer to subsequent owners and support used values.
If you are financing, this is worth thinking about before you sign rather than after. A longer loan term on a vehicle in a fast-moving segment increases the chance of owing more than the car is worth partway through.
Four EV myths worth clearing up
- "The battery will need replacing in a few years." Battery degradation is real but gradual. Most manufacturers warrant the battery for eight years and a set capacity retention, commonly around 70 per cent. Full battery failures outside warranty are uncommon.
- "You can't tow with an EV." Many can, though towing reduces range sharply. Check the braked towing rating for the specific variant rather than assuming.
- "There's nowhere to charge." The public network has expanded considerably, though coverage is far better on the eastern seaboard and major highway routes than in remote areas. Plan longer trips, but do not assume it is a problem for daily use.
- "EVs are always more expensive." Up-front, often yes. Over a full ownership period with home charging, frequently not. It depends heavily on how many kilometres you cover.
Should you buy or finance an EV?
One of the biggest levers on an EV's real cost is how you pay for it. If you're employed and your employer offers salary packaging, a novated lease on an eligible battery electric vehicle can be one of the most tax-effective ways to get into an EV, because eligible EVs can attract a fringe benefits tax exemption. The rules have conditions and thresholds, so it's worth understanding them before you decide.
