Kia Tasman 2026: Price, Specs and Is It Worth It?

A ute is rarely just a car. It tows the boat, carries the tools, does the school run and still has to be comfortable on a long drive. So when a new name arrives in a segment led by the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, it is fair to ask whether it has earned a place on your shortlist.

The Kia Tasman is Kia's first ute for Australia. Here is what it costs as at September 2026, what it actually makes, how it compares with the two best-sellers, and which grade suits which job. Kia cut Tasman pricing in May 2026. These are Kia's national drive-away offer prices for the dual cab pick-up, valid from 1 to 30 September 2026.

Offers change, so check the price again on the day you buy. A national offer is also a starting point. Dealers can still compete on the car, the accessories and the trade-in around it.

Engine, towing and specs

Every Tasman uses the same drivetrain, which keeps the choice simple.

• Engine: 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel, 154kW and 440Nm.
• Gearbox: eight-speed automatic on every grade. There is no manual in Australia.
• Braked towing: 3,500kg, with a 350kg tow ball mass rating.
• Payload: up to 1,000kg, depending on grade.
• Fuel: 7.4 to 7.5L/100km on the combined cycle, depending on grade.
• Screen: a 12.3-inch touchscreen is standard.

Only the S comes in 4x2. Every other grade is 4x4, and the S 4x4 gets a mechanical differential lock.

What each grade adds

• S: the full safety suite and the 12.3-inch screen, in 4x2 or 4x4.
• SX: terrain modes for snow, sand and mud, 17-inch alloys, Highway Driving Assist 2 and satellite navigation.
• SX+: two 240V power outlets, 18-inch alloys and wireless phone charging.
• X-Line: a surround view camera, blind-spot view monitor, heated seats, a power driver's seat and a second row that slides and reclines.
• X-Pro: the off-road grade, with an electronic rear differential lock, X-Trek low-speed cruise mode, Rock mode, a Ground View Monitor, 17-inch all-terrain wheels, a sunroof and ventilated seats.

How the Tasman compares with the Ranger and HiLux

The Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux were Australia's two best-selling new vehicles in the first half of 2026, with 26,314 and 22,607 sales. Both are strong utes, and each does something the Tasman does not.

The Ranger gives you the widest choice of drivetrain. There is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, a 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 184kW and 600Nm, and a plug-in hybrid. If you tow heavy and often, that V6 is the reason many buyers choose it.

The HiLux uses a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel making 150kW and 500Nm with the automatic. It is the one of the three that still offers a manual, on some grades. Many buyers choose it for its long reputation and a dealer network they already know.

Kia's warranty is 7 years, unlimited km, without a servicing condition, for private use. Commercial use is 7 years or 150,000km. Ford moved to 7 years on 1 September 2026, including the Ranger, as long as it is serviced at a Ford dealer. If you want a wider shortlist, the Isuzu D-MAX is worth a look too, with a warranty of 6 years or 150,000km.

Where the Tasman has ground to make up is resale. It is new to the market, so there is no long record of used values yet. For a private buyer keeping it for years, that matters less than it does for a business changing utes every three years.

Towing: the numbers behind the number

A 3,500kg braked towing rating is the headline figure across this segment, and on its own it tells you very little. The limit that usually bites first is Gross Combination Mass (GCM): the most the loaded ute and the loaded trailer can weigh together.

Work it through with your own numbers. Start with the kerb weight, then add passengers, everything that lives in the tray or on the bar, and the trailer fully loaded. Many dual-cab combinations reach their GCM before they reach the towing rating, which means you can legally tow less than the brochure suggests.

Check the tow ball mass as well, which is rated at 350kg on the Tasman. A canopy, bull bar, long-range tank or drawer system all come straight off your payload. If you tow a caravan regularly, do these sums before you choose a grade.

Price the accessories separately

Accessories are where ute deals get complicated. Bull bars, tubs, canopies, tow packs and trays can add thousands to a drive-away figure, and a discount on the ute can be recovered in the accessory margin. Ask for the vehicle and the accessories as separate line items so you can see both, and compare like with like across quotes.

Which Tasman should you buy?

• Work on sealed roads: the S 4x2 is the most affordable way in. You are paying for the tray, the towing and the drivetrain every grade shares.
• Work plus the odd dirt road: the S 4x4 or SX, which cost the same under the September offer. The SX adds terrain modes, sat nav and alloys.
• Family and weekends: the SX+ or X-Line. The X-Line's heated seats and sliding, reclining second row make a difference on long trips.
• Serious off-road: the X-Pro, for its electronic rear differential lock, low-speed cruise mode and all-terrain wheels. Be honest about how often you will use them.
• Buying through a business: the finance structure can differ from a personal loan. This is general information only, so speak to your accountant about your own situation.

Is the Kia Tasman worth it?

If you want a dual cab for work, towing or family and you value a long warranty and a well-equipped cabin, the Tasman deserves a place alongside the Ranger and HiLux. The Ranger's V6 and the HiLux's manual are real reasons to choose those instead. The Tasman's case is a 7-year warranty without a servicing condition, a sharp national drive-away price, and a lot of equipment for the money from the SX up.
